How to make “Dream India” true

Just a few minutes ago I was writing some comments in Times of India survey. The survey was asking to give some feedbacks from TOI readers. I am like a whole time readers of TOI. Because of my profession I have to be work with a computer all the day. and also as I am a person leaving in a country where I do not speak the language, hence I by compulsion I need to stay all the time close to internet. So, the best way to spend some time is to read ever updating news on TOI. Hence I thought I should some feedback to the TOI. What I wrote as a aaditional comment was this:

Dear Editor, just one comment. When you can give a hero like nature to some idiots from bollywood, why you can not make some serious reports about our Indian scientists?? These are the people who has the potential to make the Dream India true. Basic science need some real encouragements. please make regular column where you will report on some particular Indian Scientists. The topics can be : who they are, what they are trying to do, how their works can be related to our daily lives, how they spend their lives, from where the come, what are their problems. Please make these people as heroes, such reporting can really make some change and influence the minds of our children and more and more new minds will join science in future hopefully.

This comment is just what I would love to see come true. Really I daily I read a lot of news paper from India. Bengali, Hindi, English, Assamese …… in fact the total number is more or less like 15 different news paper!!! OK I do not read all of them! At least I give rough look over them now and then. In none of them I have ever seen a column where they constantly give some news about whats new in Indian Science community. But on the contrary in each of the news paper I can find at least one prominent column about what is happening in Bollywood. News paper are such a important pillar of our nation and society, the “fourth pillar of democracy”. But no regular science column on basic science?? How more stupid and ignorant a society can be?

this brings me to the point where I now decided that on a regular basis I would write some things which we should take care really if we want to see a strong and stable India in near future!!! ——————— Jai Hind.

Gnuplot : line style, every

How do I plot a part of data in a file ?

To specify a range of the data to be plotted, use the every option in the plot command. To skip every two lines, say plot “test.dat” every 2

When the data file contains several data blocks those are separated by a single blank line, you can skip the data block by the every option. To skip every two block, try plot “test.dat” every :2

every I:J:K:L:M:N
I Line increment
J Data block increment
K The first line
L The first data block
M The last line
N The last data block
every 2 plot every 2 line
every ::3 plot from the 3-rd lines
every ::3::5 plot from the 3-rd to 5-th lines
every ::0::0 plot the first line only
every 2::::6 plot the 1,3,5,7-th lines
every :2 plot every 2 data block
every :::5::8 plot from 5-th to 8-th data blocks

Alternatively (if you are on the UNIX-like system), a part of your data file can be plotted by using the unix commands, “head” and “tail“.

gnuplot> plot "< head -10 test.dat" using 1:2 with lines
gnuplot> plot "< tail -3 test.dat" using 1:2 with lines
gnuplot> plot "< head -5 test.dat" using 1:2 with lines,\
> plot "< tail -5 test.dat" using 1:2 with points

The first “plot” command says to plot the first 10 lines in the data file “test.dat”, and the second “plot” means to show the last 3 lines in the data file. The next lines are an example to draw a graph of the data file “test.dat” — the first 5 points are shown by lines, and the last 5 points are by symbols.

How do I make a figure with many kinds of lines ?

gnuplot> set term postscript eps enhanced
gnuplot> set linestyle 1 lt 1 lw 1
gnuplot> set linestyle 2 lt 2 lw 1
gnuplot> set linestyle 3 lt 3 lw 1
gnuplot> set linestyle 4 lt 6 lw 1
gnuplot> set linestyle 5 lt 1 lw 3
gnuplot> set linestyle 6 lt 2 lw 3
gnuplot> set linestyle 7 lt 3 lw 3
gnuplot> set linestyle 8 lt 6 lw 3
gnuplot> set xrange [-pi:pi]
gnuplot> plot sin( x) w l ls 1, sin(2*x) w l ls 2, \
              sin(3*x) w l ls 3, sin(4*x) w l ls 4, \
              cos( x) w l ls 5, cos(2*x) w l ls 6, \
              cos(3*x) w l ls 7, cos(4*x) w l ls 8

Remove the Acrobat Plugin

I do not like to open the pdf files inside the browser. The reason behind is that :

  • by opening the pdf file it takes me away from the page. I may want to open the pdf and also simultaneously have a look at the page.
  • I think the whole thing becomes a bit slow sometimes …
  • Also evince is such a nice document viewer which is a native of my Linux distribution (Fedora) and evince is much more fast than acroread.

any way ….. other people may have their own reasons too …. So here is what I did to disable the Acrobat Plugin :-

# locate nppdf
/opt/Adobe/Reader8/Browser/intellinux/nppdf.so
/root/.mozilla/plugins/nppdf.so
/usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/nppdf.so
# rm /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/nppdf.so

i. e. removed the file named nppdf.so from your Mozilla plugins folder.

Enjoy …..

Just recently after some update I found that the while playing the flash-videos in firefox (I do not know about other browsers!!) I can not hear any sound. Then I googled arround the web — unfortunately some of the solutions were wiered!!! or only for MS stuffs …. Here is what I did to get the sound back on my Fedora 9 machine —-

yum install libflashsupport

Ofcourse you have to be root to use yum on Fedora. Thanks to fedoraForum for the solution.

Delete desktop icons in Gnome

You need to have ‘gconf-editor’ … If you do not have then install it using :

yum install gconf-editor

Then open the ‘gconf-editor’ from Applications -> System Tools -> Configuration Editor (or just run from terminal using ‘gconf-editor’ command) and then navigate to /apps/nautilus/desktop.

Now you can uncheck the default items you don’t
want visible on your desktop.

Fedora 8 Cups Error

In Fedora 8: I faced a strange error!!! while trying to install a printer.
Error connecting to CUPS Server

[LOOK at the picture]Fedora 8 Cups Error

When I open System>Administration>Printers then first of all ‘system-config-printer’ window hangs for a long time and then suddenly comes up with the said error message. In fedora forum it they say that its a bug: and the solution is only 127.0.0.1:631 .

and yes I also did that : installed my LPD/LPR Printer (or Host).

Using Beamer Package

  • Download the latest Version of Latex Beamer Class from: http://sourceforge.net/projects/latex-beamer/ :

Download the packages named :

  1. Latex-beamer
  2. pgf
  3. xcolor
  • Un-tar the packages : you now have tree different directories named /beamer, /pgf and /xcolor!!
  • Create sub-sub-sub-directory texmf/tex/latex/ in /usr/local/share/texmf/
  • Then make three more subdirectories /beamer, /pgf and /xcolor under /latex that u just created in last step.
  • Now copy all the contents of three directories /beamer, /pgf and /xcolor that you created by un-taring the downloaded packages.
  • Finally, you need to rebuild TEX’s filename database. This done by running the command texhash or ktexlsr (they are the same)
